MBCNSW August 2022 Night Drive – Comenarra Parkway
This month we had a shorter and less adventurous night drive. We started at McDonalds Thornleigh and took the Comenarra Parkway and Lady Game drive before crossing the harbour and finishing at Harry’s Cafe de Wheels in Tempe.
Originally the drive was to finish at the Woolloomooloo location, but it has drastically cut back its late night hours. I guess this is a consequence of the shuttering of Kings Cross as a major late night venue. It’s pretty hard to find a venue open after 10PM that is suitable for these drives and isn’t McDonalds.
Harry’s at Tempe closes at 11pm, so we had to leave Thornleigh at 9:30PM sharp. This was necessary to have a reasonable amount of time there. The drive was about 50 minutes. Turn out was quite good – despite the rain. We had two W108 280SE 3.5s, a W124 300E, a W202 C200, a CLS63AMG and two W126s – my 560SEL and a 380SEC. A pretty good mix.
It was interesting to see the contrast of parking my 560SEL next to the W108. The 560SEL is Nautical Blue, but in the light it looked almost purple compared to the 920 Deep Blue W108.
It’s generally much harder to keep the group together in these inner city drives, but at least the core part of the drive through Comenarra Parkway and Lady Game drive has few lights and light traffic. We all had the google maps directions in case we got separated, which did prove useful. That was until google maps got confused with all the roadwork and tried to direct us into an endless loop. Despite all that we managed to get to Harry’s in the allotted time. This gave plenty of time for those who wanted one to grab a pie (or two).
Harry’s was really busy – It seems like a lot of these late night places are – yet fewer and fewer places are open after 9PM. For those reading outside of Sydney, Harry’s is a bit of a Sydney institution. The Woolloomooloo location is the original one, but there are a few more around the city too.
